Box Score 2 Austin, Texas—The OPSU men's and women's basketball teams each took road a road loss to St. Edward's University Thursday evening in Austin, Texas. The women fell 80-54 and the men kept it close in a nine-point loss to the Hilltoppers (92-83).
Four Aggie women scored in double digits Thursday evening as they took on the third-place team in the Heartland Conference:
Sarah Johnson led the team with 12 points and
Courtney Sheets,
Sharice Papaleo, and
Hannah Tatum finished with 11 points each.
The Aggies held their own in the first half shooting 60 percent from beyond the arc, and going into the locker room down by only ten points at the break (41-31).
St. Ed's held the Aggies scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half until
Sarah Johnson scored on a jumper in the paint with 14:52 left on the clock. However, the 21-point deficit was too much for the Aggies to overcome; the Hilltoppers maintained momentum and came out with an 80-54 victory and remain unbeaten in the Heartland Conference (3-0).
Papaleo earned her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds; she also led in assists with three.
Rosa Quinonez was 2-2 from three-point range and
Sarah Johnson (2) and
Brittany Alavinejad (1) also made shots beyond the arc. The Aggies finished the game averaging 35.4 percent from the field, 38.5 percent at three-point range, and 75 percent from the line; the women move to 0-11 overall.
The men fought hard from the opening tip and kept things close through the eleven-minute mark when an Aggie foul gave the Hilltoppers three shots at the line; after sinking all three St. Ed's found momentum and took control of the lead for the remainder of the half. The score at the break was 32-25 in favor of the home team. The Aggies averaged 35 percent from the field in the opening half.
The Hilltoppers maintained the lead throughout the second half, going up by as much as 18 points with less than five minutes left in the game; but the Aggies kept it interesting and outscored SEU 18-10 in the final four minutes. St. Ed's earned their first conference win with a final score of 92-83 and the Aggies' record fell to 0-9.
Jeremy Newton led the Aggies in scoring with a career-high 26 points and also grabbed six boards.
Bill Lee scored a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Kysahn Sands tallied 13 points as well, and
Krys Randolph broke double digits with 10 points and contributed seven assists. The men finished shooting 47.1 percent from the field, 47.4 percent at three-point range, and 70.3 percent from the line.
Both teams will travel to Abilene, Texas to continue conference play against McMurry University on Saturday, Dec. 21 starting at 1 p.m. with the women; the men tip off at 3 p.m. Aggie fans can keep up with the games via live stats and live video feeds available on the OPSU Aggie Athletics website.
